Finding the Right Tech for Your Non-Profit

A high tech satelite pointign towards the sky

Building Solutions & Finding Partnerships

An endless number of applications, databases, and services are available to non-profits.  In fact, I dare say, more than ever before.  All these choices can only muddy the waters for many non-profit decision-makers.  Sometimes too much choice is simply to much.

A bunch of old types of tech

For many in the non-profit space, how do you make heads or tails about what service, application or training to take on?  As non-profit leaders, you must find a partner that can help you navigate through all the noise and build a solution that fits your organization.

No.  This is not a sales pitch.  We want to teach you how the team at Sentinel Consulting develops solutions for our clients.  Make decisions like a pro.

Let's take a peak behind the curtain…. and use the rule of three.  What is the rule of 3 – people, process and technology.  The graphic below may help crystalize the rule of 3.  People, Process and Technology.   When looking at any solutions, be sure that all 3 elements are present.

The rule of three as a diagram

Let's say, for example, you decide automating specific key tasks is critical to your organization's success next year.  Great.  How do you tackle this?

  1. Identify the tasks

  2. Identify success criteria

  3. Document points # 1 & 2

  4. Build what are the must-haves, nice-to-haves and bonus features.

  5. Let's look at how this automation will fit into your current process.  Will changes to the current process be required?

  6. Ensure staff (people) are involved in the process.  Especially those impacted by the change.

  7. Find the tool (technology) that will work best for your organization e.g., Power Automate or API plugins.

  8. Test the process…try to break it.

  9. Train staff; document the new process

  10. Check off another to-do item off your list.

Voila….you have now planned a solution.  You followed the rule of 3.
